Where to start...

Well, in order to allow my delightful housemate access to a computer while she's here I decided to set up an account for her on my machine. That bti was easy. realising that rather than having to log out of all ym stuff to allow her to log on was going to drive me spare, I relaised this meant that I also needed to change my desktop manager.

Out with fvwm - shuddup everyone I like it :) - in with KDE. And I'll start out with saying that it's not that KDE is bad, it's just diffrent. And different in that it's more windows like. I figured out alst night that I prefer my linux stuff to be appreciably different from doze in form and function otherwise I get my behavioural expectation confused. that and, nerdy or not, I actually like command line based stuff vs gui. If I hadn't already had to hand in my not-a-geek card when i started running linux at home, that last would certainly do it.
Still, it is at least operational and I'm managing. It just makes me twitch occasionally. I can even see benefits. but I still twitch :)

And then I discovered why people say printing with linux is Satan. The device installs. It scans - thogh recommendations if good scanning software would be appreciated - it copies, it says it prints. Unfprtunately by prints it means it spews out repeated blank pages without engaging the inks at all, and only stops when you turn the printer off. For double extra bonus fun if you try the same test page through the web interface rather than the printer operations stuff it prints one blank page, then starts printing the test page, gets you all excited and then keeps printing...while stalling the paper feed. On neither of these occasions does it actually return an error. Head, meet desk.

Today's joy has been the wireless router. Which admittedly allows my hosuemaste to easily connecther laptop up and be done with it. However, despite my machine being connected via an ethernet cable, the connection drops out every 5 minutes and requires the hardware to be power cycled. In which case I stay stuff using the router unless my housemate is actually wanting the net at the same time as me. Default option is straight through the modem. Sod this for a joke.

Technology seems to be defeating me!

Aside from compeltely abusing the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' philosophy?

Yes, I would be bitching about those in charge of maintaining the glory that is lj.

I'd like to know a) Why my community psots no longer show on my friends page, and b) How I can make this change?

I noticed they made some significant changes to the userinfo page the other day, which appears to have had no purpose other than to limit functionality, but it would be ncie if it hadn't removed features as well.

Please, tell me I'm missing something obvious - providing it also comes with info on how to make it work again!

Well actually, just one way right now, but it's a biggy.
Though to be fair I'll assume it's due to work running an old version of IE.
But who wants to be fair when it's all I can acess at work?

And it means I can't play with street view on google maps! The option jsut plain is not there.
This is, trust me, much of the suck! I know I can do it at home, but that's beside the point, where's my instant gratification???

it's not the only thing work's browser breaks on, there are gchat options it doesn't have either, as well as some otehr google maps stuff.
But this is the one pissing me off today.

If I wasn't stuck with it things would be differnet.

For the record, if someone sends me a url for street view, then I can see it, but when I look something up myself, I don't get a street view option. Which is just a little strange.

Ok my friends, talk to me about hardware....

Specifically, I need:

A new harddrive to supplement my current one as it's going to run out of space before I get nearly enough music on it :)

A graphics card. Doesn't need to be anything terribly fancy - I'm not doing gaming or anything, is judt that when my last one died ages ago I defaulted to the one onboard the motherboard, and i'd like to change that

Another gig or so of RAM never goes astray - mostly I can't remember the names of the reliable brands, and after one set of dodgy ram at the time my graphics card went, I am not going cheap again.

So recommendations please folk?

This weekend saw me trade one of my corsets for art. A pretty corset to be sure, worn to much acclaim the weekend before, but I'd seen it on the person I traded it to and she looked better. And I got two pieces of art for it - which i should either take photos of or track down hers and put up here :) Now I need to figure out where to put them. Suffice to say, I am well pleased :)
I nearly came away with a pair of boots as well, but while the right foot fitted perfectly, the left boots stubbornly refused admittance and so they went to another friend. Ah well. There will be more boots ...

Sunday saw me at Chadstone, as, horror of horrors, I was out of reading material. having remedied this tragic situation, JB's tried to wrestle all my remaining funds from my bank account but only partially succeeded. i have new music. Well, new for me, nothing earth shatteringly new, but stuff I was craving.

One cd of which my computer is stubbornly refusing to recognise, much to my intense frustration as that's where I listen to my damn music. I fail at technology it would appear. It plays just fine in the cd player, but that's a little inconvenient, though at least it confirms there's nothing wrong with the cd itself, even though the software can't detect an audio cd. Mutter. I'm working on the assumption that it's an older encoding, not that that's terribly helpful at this point. Shame stamping my foot won't magically make it just work! :)

Further retail therapy shall entail new boots sometime soon as I somehow gouged a chunk out of the sole of mine on Sat night. Now all I have to do is find nice boots. It sounds so much easier than it actually is... Maybe I should just splurge on New Rocks...
